Do Crypto Payment Gateways Require KYC? 58% Do (2026 Data)

Deniz Yanbollu · August 20, 2026

Most crypto payment gateways require KYC, but not all. Of 50 crypto payment gateways audited in August 2026, 29 (58%) require business verification before you can accept a payment, 6 make KYC optional (usually above volume thresholds or for fiat), and 15 require no KYC at all.

The pattern tracks custody: providers that hold funds and touch fiat are regulated like money institutions and must verify merchants, while providers that never hold the money have nothing to gate. Most of the 15 no-KYC gateways are non-custodial or self-hosted.

Method: classification of what each of 50 gateways requires from a new merchant, from our comparison of 50 crypto payment gateways. Shieldz requires no KYC to start; you paste a wallet address and go. The trade-offs are in accepting crypto payments without KYC.
